Boy Scout Camp Falling Rock

I needed a purpose for the journey, something that would motivate me to get out of bed and back out on the road on those days when I just wanted to pull the covers up over my head; something that would make me want to keep walking just one more mile; something to propel me forward when the little voice in my head tells me to quit. Boy Scout Camp Falling Rock seemed the perfect purpose.

My husband Fred is my best friend and biggest supporter. He has been involved in scouting for 55 years. He started going to camp as a child, and continues to go to camp to work and play as an adult. He serves on the camp properties committee, whose members donate hundreds of hours, along with their own money, to construct and maintain the infrastructure of Camp Falling Rock, making it a safe, educational, and fun environment for scouts. Fred and the other committee members founded The Rock Foundation, a non-profit organization created solely for the purpose of supporting Camp Falling Rock. It provides funding for projects not covered by the normal operating budget of the Simon Kenton Council. 100% of the money raised from the Walk Across Ohio will go to the Rock foundation for facilities at Camp Falling Rock.

The Rock Foundation has some ambitious plans for restoration, renovation, and repairs in Camp Falling Rock. Several of the current projects involve the preservation of historic structures. By restoring and recycling what we already have at camp, we are maintaining pieces of history for future generations to enjoy as well as being friendly to the environment. Keeping the camp in a semi-primitive rustic state is also important, especially for Scouts who spend much of their time in an urban environment.

Current efforts include restoration of two buildings and a bridge more than 100 years old. Think about it. These structures date to a time before cars, TVs, and even electric lights. It is really exciting for us to be able to save unique pieces of architecture and engineering, while providing useful shelter and conveyance in camp.
